Daytona State College to receive scholarship grant from Mexican government

Daytona State College and the Consulate of Mexico in Orlando will stage a press conference to announce the award of a $16,600 Institute of Mexicans Abroad (IME) scholarship grant to benefit Mexican-American and international students from Mexico enrolled in Daytona State’s college credit and adult education programs.

When: Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2011 – 6 p.m.

Where:  First Baptist Church DeLeon Springs
              4995 Central Ave.
              DeLeon Springs, FL 32130

Who: Dr. Carol Eaton, President, Daytona State College
Alberto Fierro, Consul, Consulate of Mexico, Orlando

Why: The government of Mexico is interested in supporting the education of the Mexican population residing in the United States in order to improve opportunities for adult Mexican immigrants and students from immigrant families. The grant awarded to Daytona State will provide scholarships for up to 150 students enrolled in GED, ESOL and adult education programs, helping to defray the cost of their classes and other educational expenses such as testing fees, educational supplies and textbooks. In addition, the program calls for up to eight low-income students enrolled in college-level courses to each receive up to $1,000 in scholarships.

Background: IME grants are provided to educational institutions and non-profit social organizations across the US through the Mexican government’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The program’s ultimate goal is to help Mexican communities living abroad to better assimilate into their extended societies by opening doors of economic opportunity through education and workforce training.
