DAYTONA BEACH, FL (April 20, 2011) – Daytona State College’s student-athlete based Community Service Leadership Committee has created a sports day challenge event for the Arc of Volusia clients to promote positive interactions amongst them and our student athletes. From basketball dribbling to golf ball putting, each of the seven Falcon athletic teams has devised a series of one minute fun filled challenges.
WHAT: What Can You Do In A Minute? Sports Day Challenge
WHEN: Friday, April 22 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
WHERE: Gymnasium, Lemerand Center (#310) located at 1200 W. Int’l Speedway Blvd., Daytona Beach
The Community Service Leadership Committee was established in Fall of 2003 with the purpose of organizing what was an existing concept into a formal process. Members of the committee consist of one freshman and one sophomore from each team. The CSLC’s mission is to 1) provide charitable and/or monetary assistance to nonprofit organizations in need of a helping hand and 2) promote awareness of the Daytona State College student-athletes’ involvement in charitable activities/programs in the Daytona Beach community.
According to Assistant Coach for Women’s Basketball, Christena Hamilton, “Each team is represented on the Committee and throughout the year they have embraced community service projects such as the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk when they collectively raised more than $2,200, as well as volunteering for college hosted events such as the Volusia Honor Air Pre-Flight Brunch and the Taste of the 24. The sports day challenge event tops-off a great year for our student athletes who have accomplished themselves academically as well as in their sports.”
Co-captain of the CSLC, Mekiala Qualls of the Lady Falcon Basketball team was selected as the 2011 FCSAA Sandy Miller Award recipient, which is awarded to the top student-athlete in the sport of women’s basketball combining academics, community service, and athletic talent.
Other CSLC activities throughout 2010-11 include the Black & White Disability Awareness home basketball game, softball clinics, home baseball game honoring local veterans, Jr. Falcon Reading Program at the College’s lab school as well as the breast cancer survivor and sophomore recognition home game for men’s and women’s basketball.
The Arc of Volusia serves approximately 250 Volusia County adults with developmental disabilities. The Deland and Daytona Beach training centers each serve about 100 individuals providing self-help skill acquisition programs, and work skill development and sheltered workshop programs.
