Daytona State College hosts NJCAA Women’s Golf Championship

2011 NJCAA Golf ChampionshipDAYTONA BEACH, FL (May 12, 2011) - A total of 125 golfers representing 41 colleges from across the United States will compete for top team and individual titles at the 2011 National Junior College Athletic Association Women’s Golf Championship to be held May 16 - 19 at LPGA International Golf Club in Daytona Beach.

The tournament is hosted by the 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2010 National Champions, the Daytona State College Lady Falcons golf team.

With four players currently ranked in the top 10 of the NJCAA scoring statistics, all eyes will be on the Lady Falcons as they hope to retain the NJCAA title that they won last year by 60 shots, all while shattering previous NJCAA scoring records.

Of the 41 colleges represented, 21 have full teams and there are an additional 31 individual participants.

“We have a great opportunity to finish off the year by capturing another national championship,” said Lady Falcons Coach Laura Brown. “This team has performed very well this year and these players are thoroughly prepared for this year’s national championship. They have had an impressive year and are playing with a lot of confidence. We have depth on our team, as we currently have four of our top five players ranked nationally in the top 10. We are excited to begin play next week and are looking forward to the chance of keeping the title in Daytona Beach for another year.”

The Lady Falcons have six players competing in the event. Players include the national individual champion from last year, Mitsuki Katahira (Japan) - 1st team All-American, Ericka Schneider (Bradenton, FL) – 1st team All-American, Amy West (Valrico, FL); 1st Team All-American, Cassie Cleary (Punta Gorda, FL); 2nd Team All-American, Kelly Miller (United Kingdom); and Kaylee Random (Alpharetta, GA). 

The official practice round takes place on Sunday, May 15 on the prestigious Legends Course. The Legends course is a signature Rees Jones golf design – par 72 – 6,154 yards.

Daytona State College is a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association and the Florida Community College Athletics Association Mid-Florida Conference. The Falcons currently compete in seven Division I NJCAA sports, including Men's and Women's Basketball, Baseball, Fast-Pitch Softball, Women's Golf and Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving. The main focus of the Daytona State Falcons athletic program is to prepare student-athletes for success in life. This is accomplished through strong academic programs and support services coupled with quality coaching and athletic facilities.
